How to reset
Prep
Don’t shock your system. Ease into reset day by making an effort to eat whole foods, limit alcohol/caffeine/sugar, and drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your reset. Your body will be better prepared for a limited calorie day and you’ll have already done some of the taxing work of detoxing. It doesn’t hurt to psych yourself up too, so get excited!
The day Of
Some rules of the road…
1) The first and most important rule of a reset is LISTEN TO YOUR BODY. If you feel shaky, light headed or anything else unusual (besides some obvious hunger pangs) don’t be a hero, have a snack. Raw nuts, a banana, steamed vegetables, these are all good options and will keep you on track. We’re trying to give your body (and digestive system) a break, we are NOT trying to break your body. So be kind to yourself.
2) Skip the exercise routine today, you’re working with fewer calories so burning what you have could leave you depleted (see above). If you’re anything like me, this depleted feeling will just leave you more susceptible to the allure of the snack cabinet. If a day without exercise is simply not possible find something easy to do, go for a walk or do some simple stretches (not hot power yoga, thats not the same thing).
3) Drink tons of water! Don’t make yourself sick but be sure you have a water bottle or glass of water with you most of the day. This will help to flush out your system.
4) Don’t make big plans, unless those plans involve a hammock and a good book. What I mean is, you’ll probably want to have a relatively chill day. By all means, work if you must, but you’ll be more successful (and feel better) if it’s not a high pressure work day. You may also feel a little grumpy or envious of other’s food, you’re doing yourself (and others) a favor by hanging at home and relaxing.
5) Be sure your access to a restroom isn’t limited. If you’re putting that much liquid in, you’ll need to get it out too.
6) Make a plan for when you’ll have your juice. A good rule of thumb is one juice every 2 - 2.5 hours. Lots of water in between. There’s no magic to the order in which you drink the juices but we usually save the more fruit forward (i.e. sweeter) ones for mid-day to get a little sugar boost.
7) Consider starting the day with a hot lemon water and cayenne “tea”. This little fireball of a cocktail will jumpstart your metabolism and wake up your digestive tract for the onslaught of nutrients it’s about to take in. If you are an everyday coffee drinker (I feel you) consider an alternative like Matcha or Green Tea. If you simply must have coffee, skip the cream and sugar.
8) Go to bed early. I wont sugar coat it, spending a whole day juicing can be a bit of a slog. Unless you’ve got some seriously good television to watch you’ll probably just be thinking about pizza anyway. Plus, you feel so good the next morning, it’s worth crashing out early to wake refreshed and energized.
Day After
Despite the stuff your “shoulder devil” told you yesterday you will not wake up ready for a 5 course breakfast (I don’t think thats even a thing). You may have gone to bed feeling moderately unsatisfied (we humans really love to crunch) but you will wake feeling, and I’m not just saying this, like you could go another day. I’m not suggesting you should, but I have experienced the “high” myself. You will likely wake with lots of energy and in good spirits. Going back to solids is fun, but do keep up the mindful eating and choose your meals today with care. You might consider starting your day with a smoothie or oatmeal, somthing easy on the stomach. Throughout the day stick, again, to whole foods, limit alcohol/caffeine/sugars and avoid heavy meals of meat and dairy. And congrats!
